Els passerells (Carduelis cannabina) mascles fan una muda hivernal tan reduïda que no pot explicar el canvi de color del seu pit, que passa de ser marronós durant l’hivern, a ser vermell intens a principis de primavera. Guillermo Blanco i el seu equip van posar unes quantes plomes a la intempèrie i unes altres dins de casa, des de l’hivern fins a la primavera; només les plomes que havien estat exposades al sol van canviar el seu color de marró a vermell. Després de fer observacions i experiments que descartaven hipòtesis alternatives, els autors suggereixen que les plomes dels passerells contenen unes proteïnes que, al degradar-se durant l’hivern, deixen veure els carotens que confereixen el color rogenc a les plomes. Per tant, les plomes, poden canviar (i molt) de color gràcies a transformacions químiques, sense necessitat de ser mudades!

El secreto del color rojo en el pecho de los pardillos
Los pardillos (Carduelis cannabina) macho hacen una muda invernal tan reducida que no explica el cambio de color de su pecho, que pasa de ser marrón durante el invierno, a rojo intenso a principios de primavera. Guillermo Blanco y su equipo pusieron unas cuantas plumas a la intemperie y otras dentro de casa, desde el invierno hasta la primavera; sólo las plumas que habían sido expuestas al sol cambiaron su color de marrón a rojo. Después de hacer observaciones y experimentos que descartaban hipótesis alternativas, los autores sugieren que las plumas de los pardillos contienen unas proteínas que, al degradarse durante el invierno, dejan ver los carotenos que confieren el color rojizo a las plumas. Por lo tanto, las plumas, pueden cambiar (y mucho) de color gracias a transformaciones químicas, ¡sin necesidad de mudar!
